It’s a tough time in the municipal golf business.

People have less money to spend on greens fees, and the weather since last fall has been unpredictable, even by North Texas standards.

As a result, cities and their golf course operators are feeling financial strain.

Garland bought out its contractor. Mesquite took over operation of its course and spent $500,000 on equipment and capital improvements. Richardson is pouring tax dollars into its golf fund for the first time in at least a decade. Read More…

Buying Used Turf Equipment in a Global Market

By admin | November 23, 2011 at 8:00 am

When buying international turf equipment, it is important to use a dealer who has experience in the field. There is quality to be found all over the globe, and with turf and tractor that fact is no less true. Often, to get the desired quality equipment into a business’s garage, it will take more than a trip across town. If the order to too large for a domestic order or a particular machine must simply be shipped overseas, going through a turf equipment dealer who knows all aspects of these businesses can save time and money. Domestic deals are an everyday occurrence for these experts in the field of turf mowers and turf equipment. Many domestic buyers and sellers do not commonly have the means to order directly from factories across the seas. In Europe there are several hands in the deal before the turf equipment makes it to America. Here the middle man is removed and there is money saved by getting the merchandise directly from the warehouse. The extra effort here makes for very happy customers later. Read More…

Flawed Turfgrass Research Report Gets Mass Media

By admin | November 23, 2011 at 8:00 am

Turfgrass provides numerous environmental benefits and its ability to store carbon is one of them; but when a recently published and peer reviewed research study regarding the ability of turfgrass to store carbon reached the opposite conclusion of previous studies, more than a few turfgrass researchers and green industry experts were scratching their heads.

The study in question (containing miscalculations which we’ll address in a moment) got extensive media coverage because of the negative conclusions it presented. According to Amy Townsend-Small, Earth system science post-doctoral researcher at University of California, Irvine and the lead author of a study that was accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) it was suggested that the carbonstoring benefits of lawns were counteracted by fuel consumption. Focusing on four parks and lawns in Southern California, the Townsend-Small and colleague Claudia Czimczik study found that greenhouse gas emissions from fertilizer production, mowing, leaf blowing and other lawn management practices were four times greater than the amount of carbon stored by grass in parks and lawns. The UCI study was supported by the Kearney Foundation of Soil Science and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The reported conclusion reached by the Townsend-Small and Czimczik study was fundamentally the opposite of previous research findings regarding carbon sequestration in turfgrass and the amount of carbon resulting from the care and maintenance of turfgrass. To Buy New or Used, That is the Question

By admin | November 23, 2011 at 8:00 am

Article written August 31, 2009 by Sam Hicks found at http://golfcoursetradesblog.blogspot.com/

I am sure everyone is getting tired of hearing the words “in this economy”, but actually we are still in a recession and businesses are still struggling to make ends meet. This brings me to my topic of the day. Is there value and/or savings in buying used equipment for your golf course operation? In my years of experience at golf operations, I have been part of buying many dollars worth of both new and used equipment. I can see both sides of the coin.
In my earliest years at a golf course, and working with my father as a youngster, I watched him buy mostly new equipment. New carts, and new turf equipment. This was the late 1960′s. Dad’s reasoning for the new purchase I think was twofold. One, in that time period there were really very few true used equipment dealers in the marketplace. You were hard pressed to find many buying outlets for good used equipment. Most of what you could find was basically “junk for parts”. I know Dad had just such a graveyard of equipment that he cannibalized to keep his other machines running. Two, although Dad had a competent staff at his golf operation, he really didn’t have a strong mechanic type to work on his down or ailing equipment. Because of this, I think he was weary of buying older used machines. Read More…

Bermuda Prove Virtuous For The Golf Course

By admin | November 23, 2011 at 8:00 am

By Russ Nicholson, CPAg Pennington Seed, Inc. / Golf Course Trades

Bermuda and tall fescue are both popular turf choices for golf courses around the world. Extensive research has proven the two species offer many benefits – from high wearability to increased shade and cold tolerance.

“Tall fescue is ideal for roughs since it tolerates shade and expresses acceptable traffic tolerance at a modest height of cut,” says Dr. Bill Meyer, director of plant science research center at Rutgers University.
Although not as resilient as Bermuda, tall fescue continues to be a popular choice for its year-round green in most climates, relative low maintenance and high shade tolerance. Read More…
